Furniture and IT – Responsible Disposal

Fulfilling your Corporate and Social Responsibilities

With increasing pressure on organisations to fulfil their corporate and social responsibilities (CSRs), Function provide a range of services that makes it easy for businesses of any size to dispose of their redundant office furniture and equipment without damaging the environment.

Furniture disposal

More than half a million tonnes of unwanted office furniture is sent to landfill every year. One of our objectives at Function is to put your redundant office furniture to good use. So, working in partnership with environmental charity Green-Works, we offer an environmentally-friendly solution that won't cost the earth.

Our service covers practically everything in your office: desks; chairs; storage; even carpet tiles, heaters, fans and lights. We take any furniture — irrespective of condition — and guarantee that nothing is sent to landfill. Reusable furniture is distributed to charities, schools, community and voluntary groups, hospitals and small businesses across the country. Damaged furniture is repaired, re-built, broken down for recycling or donated to design projects.

By using this service you will be assisting these organisations and demonstrating your own environmental and social credentials. You will also be helping to create training and employment opportunities whilst changing the way society thinks about and deals with waste.

Disposal of IT

The aim of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) is to minimise the impact of electrical and electronic goods on the environment by increasing re-use and recycling and reducing the amount of WEEE going to landfill. Function offer a service to comply with the WEEE Directive for all redundant electrical and electronic equipment and for media such as tapes, floppy disks, CDs and DVDs.

All we require is one phone call and a minimum of 3 days’ notice. Notify us of the equipment to be disposed of and we pack and barcode your equipment prior to transporting it to our facility for testing. Each item is entered on to an asset-tracking database where information relating to the manufacturer, specification and serial number is recorded. The equipment is then tested and graded and hard drives are either wiped or destroyed.

Equipment which is operational will be sold on behalf of the customer or donated to charitable organisations. Equipment which fails the tests will be sent for recycling according to WEEE and RoHS (Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) Directives.

You can be certain that all data stored on your equipment is obliterated and totally unrecoverable by any commercial means. If a hard drive cannot be wiped, it is removed and physically punched through or degaussed, making any data unreadable.
